    Project title: ‘Evaluation of the neuroprotective and anti-apoptotic effect of Rosmarinic acid in Japanese encephalitis in an experimental murine model’
    Supervisor: Dr. Anirban Basu, National Brain Research Centre, India
    The challenge to generate a safe, cost-effective and efficacious Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine is constantly intensifying. In this context, the potential of Rosmarinic acid (Ros A/RA) as a therapeutic agent against JE insult was evaluated. The treatment with RA, at least to a considerable extent, if not fully, was capable of counterchecking the JEV induced neuronal cell death.
  • M.Sc. project (6 months), 2008
    Project title:Statistical optimization of the media components using response surface methodology for alkaline keratinase production in solid state fermentation by a feather degrading Bacillus subtilis strain and immobilization of the crude keratinase onto iron-oxide nanoparticles’
    Supervisor: Prof. A.K. Mukherjee, Tezpur University, India
    Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied for optimization of the media composition for β-keratinase production by feather degrading Bacillus subtilis RM-01 in solid-state fermentation using chicken-feather as substrate. Preliminary investigation was done to evaluate the coupling of the crude enzyme onto iron oxide nanoparticles.

Ph.D. work (January 2009- May 2013)

Thesis title: ‘Polymer assisted nanomaterials immobilized biomolecules and their potential applications’

Supervisor: Prof. Niranjan Karak, Tezpur University, India

I had worked on the preparation (based on the use of various bioresources and green chemistry tool of sonication), statistical optimization and bio-physico-chemical characterization of various polymer supported nanomaterials (e.g., magnetically responsive and antimicrobial poly(ethylene glycol) assisted iron oxide - silver hybrid nanoparticles) and polymeric nanomaterials (e.g., polyaniline nanofibers) as immobilization platforms for biocatalysts (e.g., keratinase, porcine pancreatic lipase, amyloglucosidase) and phytocompounds (e.g., curcumin and lycopene) for various biomedical and industrial (e.g., leather, food etc.) applications along with preliminary investigation on their action at the bio-interface in the milieu of shape-size-surface chemistry accord. I also worked on the electrospinning of cellulose acetate nanofibers for prospective biomedical applications during my Ph.D. course under Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship (Supervisor: Prof. M. Misra and Prof. A. K. Mohanty, Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre, Dept. of Plant Agriculture, University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada).

    During this period, I tried to understand the codon usage bias in organisms living in extreme ecological niches.

    Mentor: Dr. B. B. Mandal, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India

    I was involved in exploring the various silk varieties, endemic to North East India for various biomedical applications (primarily focused on electrospun nanofibrous hybrid mats for osteochondral tissue engineering). The other projects involved the investigation of the intrinsic fluorescence of silk based biomaterials as well as application of silk nanocomposites for environmental hazard remediation and water purification. Preparation and application of carbonaceous nanomaterial for drug delivery application was another of my endeavors. I also visited UCL, England as DST-UKIERI project co-investigator during this period to the lab, headed by Prof. J.C. Knowles.

Current Research Focus: Biocatalysts for industrial applications; regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, biopolymers for phytoprotection; nanobiomaterials for medical and environmental applications, nano-bio interfacial interactions; green nanotechnology; biomolecule immobilization
